According to some stories on NRO I linked earlier, the Watergate break-in occurred shortly after Hoover died, and Nixon appointed L. Patrick Grey as acting director. Felt knew that Grey was passing on information about the investigation to Nixon. Nixon was attempting to turn the FBI into an arm of the White House, similar to what happened under Clinton.

And then there is the other side of the coin CB.

It would be interesting to look at the time line..........as I'm sure is being done now.......I don't know when Grey was appointed, and maybe he was appointed for the sole reason that Nixon wanted to be informed about the investigation?

Or maybe he was appointed before the Watergate break in?

There were allot of people in WDC that didn't want a Hoover clone running the FBI. Up to that point the FBI was a mini dictatorship and they believed a change was in the best interest of the nation.

I'm still on the library computer and on my way out of town, but I should have my computer back early next week. I'll look into it then if no one else has.
