VoIP player opens center in Bangalore US based VoIP infrastructure maker, Sonus Networks plans to market its VoIP solutions to the Indian telecom segment soon. Priya Padmanabhan Tuesday, April 19, 2005 BANGALORE: With a twin purpose to tap the burgeoning telecom market in the country and also to cash in on Indian software engineering talent, US based VoIP infrastructure maker, Sonus Networks has established a development center in Bangalore.
Sonus Networks VP, Mike Eastep said, "This will be our largest development center outside the US. We hope to hire 100 employees in the next two years." Around 60 percent of the hires would be in R&D while the rest would look at support for the Asia Pacific region.
While Eastep declined to comment on the investment into the center, he expects more than half of the engineering operations to happen from India.
On the engineering activities at the India center, Sonus Networks India MD, Shalin Sehgal said that the engineers were working on developing software applications like Interactive Voice Response (IVR) around the IP Multimedia Sub-system (IMS) architecture. "We will be launching a new product in June this year, as an adjunct to our existing set of systems to enhance our feature set. Some of this work on this and SIP interface will also happen out of India," he added.
On the marketing front, the company hopes to rope in tier one and tier two telecom players in India as customers for its VoIP infrastructure solutions.
Highlighting the company's interest in the Asian market, Sonus APAC VP Simon Naylor said, "India and China are investing in trying to improve teledensity and slowly these countries are getting ready to adopt next generation networks. In the last 12 months, we have been talking to key players in India and are currently developing various telecom protocols required to interface Indian telecom infrastructure. " He added that the company's growth in India would happen in the coming months.
Sonus Networks delivers carrier applications including trunking, tandem switching and network border switching, and voice solutions like media gateways and network management systems.
