OT - Soros alleges Putin told former President Kuchma to fire on protesters
Jun 03 2005, 17:37

(AP) - U.S. billionaire George Soros alleged June 3 that Ukraine's former President Leonid Kuchma was advised by his Russian counterpart to order troops to fire on opposition protesters during last year's pro-democracy Orange Revolution.

The comments by the philanthropist who has funded democracy projects in the former Soviet Union drew sharp response from the Kremlin, which called the allegations "the fruit of his imagination."

Soros, on a tour of several former Soviet republics including Georgia and Ukraine, said Russian President Vladimir Putin had counseled Kuchma to have Interior Ministry troops fire on the millions of orange-clad demonstrators who jammed Kyiv's streets following the first round of the presidential election.

"Fortunately, Kuchma did not follow the advice," Soros told reporters in the Ukrainian capital.

He provided no evidence for his claim.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the accusations as inappropriate and "as a whole the fruit of his imagination."

"Of course they have nothing in common with reality," he told The Associated Press.

The peaceful mass protests last winter helped usher Viktor Yushchenko into the presidency after he defeated Kremlin-backed Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych in a court-ordered repeat of the presidential vote.

Soros has praised the protests in Ukraine.

Many politicians loyal to Kuchma and Yanukovych have accused organizations that received funding through Soros' Open Society Institute of fomenting unrest in Ukraine and in similar uprisings in Georgia and Kyrgyzstan that helped the Western-leaning opposition take power from Russia-backed regimes.

In Georgia, Soros was met with protests by nationalists who threw eggs at him and accused him of funding the salaries of state employees. He has denied the allegations.

Soros also alleged June 3 that Putin advised Uzbekistan's president to order troops to fire at protesters in an eastern city where hundreds died in what authorities described as clashes with Islamic militants.

Human rights groups claim government forces fired at unarmed civilians.
