Agree that the Yukos affair is disturbing. Hard to know for sure, but I suspect that the Russian leadership is indeed trying to take as much control of the natural resources as they can. Maybe they want to follow the Saudi (g/ng) model, when the central Government keeps the entire nation fed and relatively happy - based on the income from oil sales.

But - you know what? - I think God help them - and maybe us too - if the Russian Federation cracks up into a hundred independent "republics" and caliphates and emirates and so forth. There would be room for conflict and mischief beyond imagination. In comparison, Yugoslavia may look like a kindergarten preview.
