In regard to Mr. Smithee's answer, let me add that the REPUBLICAN leaders of the Senate (including "Mr. Republican" of his day, Barry Goldwater) went to the WH after the House impeachment vote and told Nixon that if he did not resign, he faced CERTAIN conviction by the Senate.

As others have said, I suggest you study the history of the period.
