Suppose a candidate picked 10 domestic issues and 10 foreign policy issues Maybe you are defining ideology more narrowly than I am. In my view, issues are just threads of the overall ideology. I'm thinking social democracy vs. marketplace, big government vs. small, conformity vs. freedom, evangelical vs tolerance, authoritarian vs libertarian, people are basically good vs people are basically evil, them/us vs. brotherhood of man, etc. Where you stand on Social Security reform is just one of the issues du jour. I agree that issues don't last long. But those ideological questions endure for centuries.
