Backward compatibility is very important. Who want to spend $15 for a zip diskette when you can get a 1.44 floppy for pennies? If Zip was able to read the 3.5" floppy then it would definitely become the new standard. Where are the rumours of backward compatibility for the zip?

I have a floppy drive, why do I need backwards compatibility?

If the floppy was useful I would not have bought a Zip drive. The floppy is useless, that is why Zip drives are so popular.

The most important consideration of OEMs for new peripherals has been price and consumer acceptance. Zip drives are inherently cheaper than Syquest drives, MO drives, or LS-120 drives. Consumer acceptance always preceeds OEM inclusion. SoundBlasters, Video Accelerators, and Modems were all big retail hits before OEMs started bundling them. No consumer has yet buy an LS-120.
