The gulag quote was an unfortunate shift of argument, I would agree. However, it was so attention getting that it was being discussed on the Sunday news programs, and their spokesperson Shultz was interviewed. I think they probably have gotten the level of attention they wanted, at least, even though I am sure they hoped it would be more focused on human rights abuses among the detainees than on defending the original statement.
