The terrible situation in Iraq was created by a president with an agenda for the region who made up reasons to justify going to war there. Many of the people detained there are guilty of nothing, and are not terrorists at all. In fact, at the beginning of our prison system there, Iraqis with grudges to settle were simply turning in people who were their enemies. At least the U.S. realized what was happening finally in that regard.

I think a fair compromise regarding the detainees would have been to abide by the Geneva Conventions in every way. That would have kept the ones who were terrorists out of commission, and maintained the reputation of America as a fair and just nation.

Certainly, a president with someone like Alberto Gonzalez who worked together to redefine what humane treatment is, and who supports sending some detainees to third countries for more rigorous torture, is making no attempt to be compassionate or humanitarian.

I dispute that there is no objective standard for what "more compassionate and humane" means. It does mean abiding by international standards like the Geneva Conventions in caring for detainees. We can accept that some of the detainees might kill Iraqis or American troops, but we operate that way in general, or we become as bad as they are, morally speaking, in my opinion. And we already have blown plenty of innocent Iraqis apart ourselves.
