Here what was in the 9/8/97 issue:

AAII Index 37.0 % 25.0 % 38.0 %
Consensus Inc. 32.0 %
Market Vane 57.0 %

For comparison, at the bottom in April, the numbers were:

II 35/41/23
AAII 26/37/37
COn 27
MV 42

So you see that sentiment didn't fall nearly as bearish as during the April correction.
