It's a shame your parents did not have a will establishing what to do with their property in the event of death. I have a will, but my parents don't and neither does my husband. A simple handwritten document entirely in your own handwriting with your own signature (called a holographic will) is legal in most states, or you can get inexpensive software from Quicken that's actually quite good, although it's not legal in all states.

But losing your childhood treasures when you join the military can't be all that uncommon. Pretty much everybody I know had their rooms cleaned out when they went away to college.
