Because words are supposed to have meanings, and it is not possible to discuss ideas meaningfully unless there is some reasonably close common agreement on the meaning of those words. Otherwise, we are all wandering around with Alice in Wonderland. Politicians love to ignore that basic fact of human discourse, and impute their own meanings to words in order to make political points or just for simple demagoguery.
