Dems lack message discipline!!...Interesting Comments from the DailyKos weblog...

dailykos.com

I couldn't agree more... I'm doing hospice care for a parent and during the campaign I saw most of the coverage on multiple stations. Additionally I'm a writer/producer/director and have done far too many political commercials in my career.

It was really evident that the democrats:

1. LACK OF MESSAGE DISIPLINE: Did not stay on message from one spokesperson to another. The Republicans were absolutely relentless and looked like pod people clones... but their talking points came through with every spokesperson they had.

2. HAVE POORLY PREPARED SPOKES-PEOPLE: Many of the Dems spokespersons not only did not stay on message, but lacked good debating skills and were out maneuvered by hostile hosts who the White House had primed. They obviously had not prepared well for their interviews.

3. HAVE POORLY CHOSEN SPOKES-PEOPLE: It's not an accident that FOX chose the "nerdish and wimpy" Colmes to represent the liberal point of view, contrasted against the burly "robust voiced" Hannity.

Television is a medium where appearances count as much, if not more so than substance. What we saw was a parade of well meaning, impassioned, but wimpy nerds blathering off topic points and missing opportunities to rebut GOP assertions. They clearly didn't have the right stuff or stature to be making the talking heads circuit rounds.

4. MESSAGE EQUIVOCATION: The Dems got caught in trying to appeal to centrist and the left wing of the party too much. They walked into traps by hosts of shows all too easily because they were vulnerable there. They should have decided a clearly defined message that would appeal to centrist and be acceptable to their left wing base as well, stayed on message, ignored host baiting and answered with the scripted verbiage... as the Repubs did so effectively.

Honesty and sincerity is fine in a private conversation but it is disastrous in a political debate.

5. SHOULD HAVE ANTICIPATED FRAUD: The Dems did anticipate fraud with their 10,000 attorneys and such, but I don't think in light of the Conyers Report that they were really prepared for just how far the GOP would go and what counter measures to use.

Lets face it folks we were up against the meanest pack of junkyard dogs that has been seen in US history. The antifraud stuff for the 2006 election needs to be addressed now, otherwise points 1-4 are meaningless.

6. RAPID REACTION MEDIA TEAM NEEDED: Too often the dems were hit with bullshit that stuck because it got out there and the dems didn't respond fast enough. The DNC needs to have stuff archived and indexed on hand to throw back at the repubs as fast as they churn it out and highly skilled media folks on staff dedicated to doing it.

The recent "fireside chat" thing that Senator Reid did is a good example of what not to do... just a little better lighting kit and good camera direction and it would have come off a whole lot better. Ask the ghost of Richard Nixon about the Kennedy debates and just how important appearances are...

That's my little rant...
