jdn - While I think every one of the points you make is valid, i also think there may be some very good reasons to announce a departure date. For one, it would clearly show that the US has had absolutely no intention of ever being an occupying force. And if the terrorists do sit back and wait, then it would make the job of getting the Iraqi forces up to speed easier. And it doesn't mean that the US and the Iraqi govt wouldn't continue their efforts against the terrorists; perhaps it would even encourage more cooperation by the civilian population in that regard.
