Plant trees, not flags ?
Interesting book. It inspired some friends to run a tree sale for a few years. They would buy multiple thousands of seedlings from the big tree nurseries, and sell them at cost in front of the post office; 10-25 cents each. You can see their "children" all over the area. ############################################################
"The Man Who Planted Trees," by Jean Giono
BuzzFlash's Recommendation
To start the week, we are taking a break from contemporary political premiums and offering a special edition of Jean Giono's, "The Man Who Planted Trees."
Jean Giono, the only son of a cobbler and a laundress, was one of France's greatest writers. His prodigious literary output includes stories, essays, poetry, plays, film scripts, translations and over thirty novels, many of which have been translated into English. Giono, a pacifist, was twice imprisoned in France during World War II. He remained tied to Provence and Manosque, the little city where he was born in 1895 and, in 1970, died.
In this fable, he tells the story of a solitary French shepherd who planted one hundred acorns a day for thirty years, transforming the environment and community around him. It is an eloquently told tale of how an individual can have such a positive impact through the strength of his convictions and the stamina to pursue them.
This is a lovingly produced short book, with evocative engravings by Michael McCurdy, one of America's finest wood engravers. It includes a forward by Wangari Maathai, the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. A recipient of numerous awards for her work on environmental and social issues, she was elected to Parliament by an overwhelming majority in 2003 and is currently the Assistant Secretary for Environment, Wildlife, and Natural Resources in the new democratically elected Kenyan government. The afterword is by Andy Lipkis, Founder of TreePeople.
The book was republished in a special edition by Chelsea Green Publishing Company. It speaks to how one person can enhance the environment, or, metaphorically, change the world for the better.
Literally, it is about what one poor man did to promote the growth of trees. But it speaks to much more than that. Because the actions of the shepherd remind us what we all can do to make our communities more livable and sustainable.

“Jean Giono’s story of a man's generosity to nature—and through nature, to other humans—surely belongs among the most moving and endearing statements of our hope. The story—vision and parable and manual—correctly opposes the tree-planter, the earth-husband, to the makers of war. In the figure of Elzéard Bouffier, Giono summaries the best that can be said of our species. It has given me much joy to reread this story.” —Wendell Berry
