The next killer app will probably make use of hardware only available on the Intel side (eg, you seen any PCI-e graphics on Powermacs lately?) so the ease of dual-compiling software makes no difference at all. Add in the way Intel integrates goodies into its chipsets (eg wireless) and it seems pretty clear to me that the PPC and x86 families are going to be divergent from Day 1.
