21:56

NOVOSIBIRSK, June 7 (RIA Novosti, Yana Ryabinskaya) - World fuel and energy centers may be set up in East Siberia in the future, academician Alexei Kontorovich said at the 1st Siberian energy congress in Novosibirsk on Tuesday.

"West Siberian regions are playing the leading role in oil and natural gas production today. However, major centers of oil and gas production and processing of hydrocarbon raw materials may be set up in East Siberia in the near future," said Kontorovich, the director of the Institute of Oil and Natural Gas Geology at the Siberian department.

According to him, the lack of geological survey is the main problem.

Deputy presidential authorized representative in the Siberian Federal District Igor Prostyakov said at the congress that projects in the fuel and energy complex, including the development of major deposits of natural resources, was an important aspect of Siberia's development strategy.

Recommendations to the Russian government, State Duma and Federation Council (the lower and upper houses of the parliament) will be adopted following the congress, Prostyakov said.

Representatives of executive federal bodies, administrations of the district's constituent entities and fuel and energy companies and scientists are attending the congress.
