there are times when I sense that both parties push other with the expectation that the US will intervene and set things right.

Name a time when the Palestinians pushed the Israelis with the expectations that the US will intervene and set things right. I don't think the Palestinians expect the US to help them much at all.

There were two Rose Garden press conferences with Bush about a year ago, one with the new Iraqi interim leader and the other with Sharon. They were about two days apart. With the Iraqi leader Bush expressed his support for the emergence of a free, stable Iraq where all people and religions will be treated equally. With Sharon, Bush expressed his support for a Jewish Israel. The hypocrisy and contradiction of the two views was never even questioned in the press.
