it is hard to explain... there are people who live in modest apartments, with basic utilities - electricity, water, gas etc, and there are people who live in expensive apartments with a pool etc, all alongside people living in shantytowns using public toilets, no gas. What will amaze an outsider visiting a place like Bombay, is that there will be a person living in a hut in a shantytown, with no private toilet facilities, but you look at the roof of the hut, and you will see a satellite dish there.

"Island" implies some level of isolation from the 'outside world'. That is not true in India.
