I'm still totally discombobulated over this. It seems that just around now the PPC seems to getting rid of its inertia and is showing more promise than it did for quite a while.

OK so G5s suck. That is they suck in the manner that they should be so much more powerful and use less power than they are today. But it seems like there is so much promise on the horizon now for PPC.

And Jobs announces switch to Intel. Maybe Intel has something up their sleeve? Something great and wonderful on the dark side* of the horizon?

Or did Jobs just have a hissy fit with IBM? (well yeah, but still...)

Well, we could say that he is keeping options open by having two platforms for transition stage, and possibly could he back out of switching in two years if IBM shapes up? (Nah)

Examples of PowerPC excellentfulness:

• Open Cell / low power for lappies theregister.co.uk
• ten times the capability of current PC processors pcworld.com
• STI cell processor www-1.ibm.com
• Cell Architecture Explained blachford.info

Note:
*- Intel as "dark side" - back in the old days, pre-Mac, pre-PC, Intel was a bit like MS today and well known for their FUD, even then. After all, they "invented" the microprocessor on a chip, why shouldn't they be that way? :-S
P.S. - that was opinion back then of my colleagues - personally, I always admired Intel chips, they were and are quite clever and useful especially if you were designing with TTL & CMOS - they simplified design greater than other companies chip IMO. I liked them all except their processors. Why? Ugly instruction set. Unlike 68xxx & PPC which I always felt were quite elegant.
