People can only truly appreciate being on top of a mountain when they know what the bottom looks like.

I understand your point about appreciating how good we have it. I think that most people do even if they haven't been to third world countries on three continents as have I. And if they don't, then a visit to one of those countries would focus them.

What I'm not following is how you get from appreciating the US to enlisting. The first time I saw the difference first hand was when I was a student in Mexico in 1963. I can't say that that or any subsequent experience inspired me to enlist. Never made the connection. Still don't. Don't see why anyone would. More likely it would inspire one to join the Peace Corps or the World Bank or run for Congress or start a corporation or teach economics, seems to me.
