T, so, those who know you want you shot. <G> Back in 1967, the Army was paying a Variable Reenlistment Bonus. Basically, if you reenlisted, you got a bonus. But if you were in certain specialty work, that bonus was a multiple of the average bonus. So, while men risking their lives in the boonies in Nam were offered $1500-3000 to reenlist, my friend was offered $12,000 due to a high demand military intelligence specialty with Russian language. Sounds puny today, but it was big money in 1967. At the time, his pay was $2500 a year, taxable. They flew you to Saigon to receive the bonus, so it was tax free. Then flew you back. And in his specialty, he was not likely to get shot.
I remember when I got out, the guy processing my forms said, "Did you know that you are eligible for reenlistment? And the type of bonus you can get?"
