From personal experience, I can tell you that when entering new markets, AMAT management often "doesn't know what it doesn't know". In my opinion, they often do the equivalent of bringing a football playbook to a basketball game. The plays may be excellent and used int he past with excellent results, but the result in the new game will not be as intended. Creating a datapath to convert the hierarchical representations in the datafile to an approximation of the analog result coming from the sensors in "real time" is a difficult task. Only guessing, but I'd bet they underestimated the level of complexity. They made many such errors in the mask writer arena. Ira
