There was certainly no rush until the 1800s. Ironically, as far as I've heard, the push for the Jews to have a nation-state was started like 50 years before Herzl, by Christians in Europe, half of whom just figured that with the rise of the modern nation state in Europe it would make sense that the Jews would have a state, and the other half of whom just wanted a way to get the Jews out of their own countries... how much of that is true, I don't know, but it's certainly interesting. -Z
