Global Copper Demand Fell 5.5% in 1st Quarter, Study Group Says 2005-06-09 09:04 (New York)
By Matthew Craze June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Global copper demand fell 5.5 percent in the first quarter, compared with the same quarter a year ago, led by declines in the U.S., Europe and Japan, the International Copper Study Group said. Copper demand fell 15 percent in Europe, 13 percent in Japan and 11 percent in the U.S., the Lisbon-based group said in an e- mailed report today. China, the world's largest copper consumer, used 6.4 percent more over the same period. Global usage totaled 4.03 million metric tons, compared with 4.26 million tons in the year ago period. Copper mine production rose 7.5 percent in the first quarter to 3.54 million metric tons, the group said.
