By Matthew Craze
June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Global copper demand fell 5.5 percent
in the first quarter, compared with the same quarter a year ago,
led by declines in the U.S., Europe and Japan, the International
Copper Study Group said.
Copper demand fell 15 percent in Europe, 13 percent in Japan
and 11 percent in the U.S., the Lisbon-based group said in an e-
mailed report today. China, the world's largest copper consumer,
used 6.4 percent more over the same period. Global usage totaled
4.03 million metric tons, compared with 4.26 million tons in the
year ago period.
Copper mine production rose 7.5 percent in the first quarter
to 3.54 million metric tons, the group said.
