TJ, you are in luck. You can now buy W-CDMA in Hong Kong. I think you will soon be paying me a royalty and perhaps buying an ASIC too. <06.09.05

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong mobile operator Sunday Telecoms and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., the largest telecommunications vendor in China and one of the world’s leading networking and communications equipment companies today announced that Sunday’s WCDMA 3G network, which is built by Huawei Technologies will be rolled out commercially today. The newly-constructed 3G network, which covers the entire Hong Kong, incorporates Huawei’s end-to-end network solution. The solution consists of an R4-based softswitch core network, a packet domain core network, more than 1,000 base stations, service platforms, and terminals.

The commercial use of Sunday’s 3G WCDMA network is a large-scale application of Huawei Technologies’ 3G base stations. The complicated wireless Hong Kong environment, surrounded by high-rise buildings, proves that any successful application in such an environment demonstrates Huawei’s 3G capabilities in networking, coverage and optimization. With Huawei’s 3G technologies, equipment, and engineering service, third-party tests have proved Sunday’s 3G network to be of outstanding quality that will deliver to customers an experience of seamless coverage and excellent performance in this challenging geographical environment.

Sunday’s 3G network will provide almost twenty services, including high-precision AGPS location service, videophone, media streaming, videoconference, downloading of music and so on. After upgrading its software, the network will support higher-speed HSDPA R5 data services of (up to) 14.4 Mbps. The 3G data card launched by Sunday is provided by Huawei Technologies which can reach up to 384 kbps of concurrent transmission, making it the first in the industry.

Xu Fuzhi, general manager and director of Sunday Group noted, “Since Huawei and Sunday signed the UMTS commercial use contract, the two parties have spared no efforts and are dedicated to launching 3G services that meet consumers’ demands. Huawei’s strengths in product performance, quality, service, and service provision capability will ensure that Sunday continues to stand out as a major telecom provider in Hong Kong’s complex environment. We are confident of and strongly believe in the 3G network launched today.”

Xu Zhijun, executive vice president of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. commented, “The 3G network that Huawei builds has always been successful in covering the most complicated geographical and wireless environment worldwide. Hong Kong, which ranks No.1 in terms of complicated geographical environment, requires special solutions to achieve solid coverage. Huawei believes that its high-reliability and high-quality networks, abundant services and rapid service provision ability can provide Hong Kong users with wonderful 3G experiences.”
