If oil gets too expensive, we won't all go back to the 19th century. We'll spend more time in 3D cyberspace for example. That'll probably happen anyway, and oil will be abandoned, as horseshoes were. It wasn't that horseshoes became too expensive. Same with posting letters. It wasn't really that stamps became too expensive, it was more that email was more convenient and quick.
