"Illegal entry would assume a contractual obligation to serve the government."

Personally, I agree with that. I just don't think it would be
acceptable to our left leaning peers (not that they'd go for
anything like this idea in any event).

The blog entry said that if you quit you are immediately
deported & cannot apply to return until your service time
would have expired. He also said that you would forego
citizen & voting status for an additional 5 years after you
fulfill your service commitment (I believe he said it was a
negotiable point).

My caveat would not allow any win-wins for illegals either.
If you are found to be here illegally, then rather than
permanent expulsion, just enforce the 'I quit' policy on
those folks. You are deported for 5 full years before you can
apply to serve a full stint.

Again, I don't disagree with your POV ("If you do not want to
serve the US, then stay out of the country"). In the interest
of compromise to the knee jerks who would be appalled at one
strike you are out, I think we leave the door open for
foreigners to change their mind or those who try to cheat &
come here illegally anyway. Only allow one illegal entry
violation - a second would make the expulsion permanent. Just
make it clear that each time you change your mind the penalty
will be stiffer. And it will be enforced 100% of the time -
no exceptions.
