Fisher Scientific to Buy Clinical Products Supplier McKesson BioServices for $60 Million

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) -- Lab-equipment supplier Fisher Scientific International Inc. is buying the clinical-trial supply business of drug distributor McKesson Corp. for $60 million in cash, the companies said Thursday.

Fisher said the acquisition of McKesson BioServices will broaden its offerings of clinical trial services.

The Rockville, Md., unit manages biological specimens and clinical-trial materials, shipping experimental drugs or chemicals to research centers and labs. BioServices posted 2004 sales of $50 million.

The companies expect the deal to close sometime between July and September. McKesson said it will record a gain of $13 million to $15 million when the sale closes. The company will report results from the unit as discontinued operations starting in the current quarter.

Fisher Scientific shares rose 51 cents earlier on the New York Stock Exchange to close at $63.87, while McKesson shares closed up 14 cents at $40.65.
