I don't think attacking people who want Dean to be a little bit more polite is the answer for the democratic party. There are a lot of religious people in this country, and a lot of white people- quite a few of those people are probably democrats (with approximately 76% of people in the US identifying themselves as Christian, you KNOW there have to be.) Even if it were true, sometimes saying something ugly like that turns off more people than it would attract. What Dean said makes it sound like it's bad to be white and/or Christian- I'm not sure that's the kind of message we want to send out to attract people to the democratic party. At it's best we can classify it as a true statement which is race baiting, and religion baiting; at it's worst we can classify it as race baiting and religious baiting, and also false (I have to go with race baiting and false, myself- but either way we classify it, it's bad.) IMO this isn't about "truth" it's about appealing to the worst side of people- and in this case it probably isn't even an affective appeal.
