I don't think Cisco would ever buy a company the size of Nortel. They have their M.O. down; buy a small company that has a ready product and market share, and absorb them quickly. More acquisition than merger... In defense of NT, I guess you could say that no one is setting the world on fire in this space right now. Survival is the watchword. NT has done ok, considering the number of shoes they've dropped. It will be interesting to hear what the differences in strategy were between Owens and the COO. I worked at a company (Clarify) that was acquired by Nortel, and I know there is a huge culture clash between Silicon Valley and non-Silicon Valley techs. That might have been a bit of it.
