The homeless issue always sticks in my mind because the US is one of the only developed countries that lets the situation persist in such staggering numbers. Even many less developed countries have a stronger family ethic that means the "down and outs" will be taken in by someone before they are left under a freeway to freeze.

It's an area where such a rich country should do better, IMHO. I realize that improving the situation takes money and the necessary will across a huge range of city, state and federal agencies. But when we spend hundreds of billions to forestall further terrorism, it seems like the lives of street people should have more value than they currently enjoy.
