The problem is that he is not actually asking them back in the sense that they get their farms back. Instead, he wants their technical skills only, for 5 or 10 years. In fact, awhile ago Mugabe claimed he was going to outlaw private property ownership period, just allow leases up to 99 years IIRC. Well, he is getting old, so change will come at some point.

Rhodesia under Ian Smith was quite the food producer, sanctions and all. Used to export to the northern basket cases that backed Mugabe.

Reminds me of the tale in Uganda, where Israeli technicians installed hydroelectic generators on a dam. The generators failed while under the tender neglect of the Ugandan operators, who requested that the Israelis not come and install new equipment, but rather just "send more horsepower" as that was urgently needed.

Mugabe does not want white farm landowners, just "more harvest" as that is urgently needed.
