The Democrats are SO marginalized and out of power as a party, that they really need to do everything right if they have any hope at all of regaining much in the upcoming elections. I suspect there may be people who are a bit more diplomatic than Dean, and might do a better job of running the party without antagonizing independents, who they are going to have to pick up if they have any hope of success.

This does not mean that the Democrats have to become more conservative or change their core beliefs. But why can't they just be reasonably polite, and attack the Republicans based on the great harm some of their programs are doing, rather than just alienate people based on bad attitude?
