Two comments:
1. Regarding the flag, I have flown one 24/7 ever since 9/11/01. I have a light source on it at night which I understand makes it proper. However, here in Fla. they really dont stand up more then a few months before they are pretty worn. When I replace one, I save the old one. A friend travels to Mass. couple times a year and he knows an organization, forgot which, that properly burns them, I give him my old flags and he delivers them for me.
2. Regarding retrieving the dead on the battlefield. I dont know what is taught today, but when I was in bootcamp we were informed that the Marines NEVER leave you behind, dead or alive. Thus, I can personally vouch that we went to extreme effort to retrieve even a dead body, even sometimes under threatening conditions. Then, graves registration or whatever they are called takes over. That was an awful job and many were actually forced to participate as usually no one could last at it for very long. jdn
