For the soldier, it has always been considered that the flag, is your country.

I understand that sentiment. Really. I'm just trying to counter the extremist notion that it's OK to kill or maim somebody who disrespects it. It's not OK. It's nuts to die or kill for a flag.

Say that you were in a federal building when a terrorist bomb went off. The building is burning and trembling. What are you going to do? You get out as fast as you can, of course. You might risk your escape to stop along the way to lend a hand to a person trying to get out, a person who for all you know may have burned a flag at some time in his life. But, unless you're nuts, you wouldn't waste a single second trying to rescue the flag from its stand in your office. It's just a flag.
