The most valid of the questions being raised about the collapse of the three WTC towers is not concerned with the loss of strength of the A36 structural steel columns. Rather, the question to focus on is how the government's official explanation of a gravitational collapse in any way explains the high velocity ejecta from the buildings as they collapse. Shaped charges and controlled demoltion easily explains the spreading of the building debris at rates up to 300 feet per second, whereas the official story of a gravitational collapse completely fails to explain the pattern of destruction that has been captured on various video and still camera shots.
In this remarkable photo, we see a woman in the gaping hole in WTC-1, clearly indicating that the temperature in that part of the building could not possibly be hot enough to weaken any structural steel element:

It is this sort of energetic horizontal exploding force that has created millions of skeptics regarding the "official story" of a gravitational collapse.

WhatReallyHappened.com discusses the heat/fire issue and concludes that rather than the fires causing the collapse of the towers, it was precisely because the fires were either going out or being successfully knocked down by the FDNY that the operators triggered the collapse of South Tower less than an hour after the plane crash. This is a red herring that has no application to the situation at the WTC towers. Furthermore, structural steel turns out to be an excellent conductor of excess heat. Tests of steel framed parking structures in several countries prove that even raging petroleum fires in these open framed structures simply cannot raise the temperature of structural steel beyond about 400 degrees Centigrade, a temperature at which the steel retains plenty of strength considering the gravitational loads imposed.

Furthermore, the government never madet the claim that the 47 super-heavy steel columns in the core of both WTC 1 and 2 were in any way damaged below the elevation at which the planes impacted the building. Thus, this steel was completely intact and servicable at the time that the collapses commenced. This being the case, if the "pancake" theory were anything other than wishful thinking and fantasy, we should have seen the floors collapsing around a rigid core structure, much as old phonograph records would collapse around the central spindle. But that is not what happened.
What did happen is that explosives pulverized the concrete in the WTC towers in a fashion that no gravitation effect has ever done, but which every controlled demolition routinely does.
.... and then the government hauled off all the evidence before forensic investigators could examine the site. Pretty damn suspicious.
