If this is true, why are they not revolting and overthrowing the ayatollahs? They did in 1979 when they were fed up with the Shah.

It's a good question. Revolution is never as easy to start as it seems from the armchairs you and I sit in. But I think there's a little bit of an answer in a Time article I read recently. Read it and tell me if you think some answers are in there:

While its what I suspected, its still pretty depressing stuff to read. People often get what they want....for the Iranians apparently this is what they want........at least for now. And this is the major reason why I am against nation building and trying to transplant democracy.

For democracy to succeed, the people have to want it badly. It has to burn in their stomachs.......like it did with the Ukrainians. They were willing to stand in -10º F. weather day after day, and were ready to die if need be to get their freedom. It looks like the Iranians are there yet.

It was a good article. To me, it says that probably much of the ME is not ready.
