I've got to tell you, I've never heard of a $6,500 bill for anesthesiology like you were billed, even for a open-heart operation and puffed up to pay for the uninsured. I wonder how many anesthesiologists worked how many hours for that?

I've notice that insurers like Blue Cross are picking up a larger portion of the bill for the uninsured.

Ten years ago the discount on inflated hospital bills down to the "contracted rate" approached 90%.

I had a minor out-patient operation last year, with full anesthesia, (five hours door to door) and the Blue Cross contracted rates were 55% of the bill from the hospital and the anesthesiologist, and 100% of the surgeon's bill.

 	 	Billed Paid
Hospital $14,068 $7,737
Anesthesia $680 $380
Surgeon $475 $474
