I had the most interesting discussion on another thread. Unfortunately it was ruined by some personal attacks, but I find the issue interesting. Let's see if you do.
We were talking about dead bodies and flags. The idea of rescuing either, at the risk of a living man (or woman), strikes me as very wasteful, mostly because I see flags as fabric and dead bodies as meat. I think we need to save the living if possible, but bodies are of almost no consequence to people in my family. Now this idea was considered outrageous. Do you think that's an outrageous idea? Obviously our family will continue to think what we think, because it's just the way we are, and it doesn't really affect anyone else anyway, but I'm curious now. How do you see dead bodies? In our family we cremate and scatter- but the person that we loved is gone at death, and the cremation and scattering has little to no meaning. We have memories, which are probably the most precious thing we have, and I would say we treat those with reverence because the person lives in our memory, but the body is only a memento of death, an empty shell, a decaying box that once held something precious, but does no longer.
I don't want you to feel offended, I'm just curious when I ask, and whatever you think about dead bodies certainly won't offend me. |
