I don't know whether I hate Bush or not. I guess I feel somewhat the way I remember feeling when I was in a car being driven by a drunk driver on a winding mountain road. It was a relief to get to the end of the trip.

I do keep reflecting that when Bush came into the presidency:

1. The budget was not only balanced, but we were running a surplus.

2. The all-volunteer army was working fine and the level of training and morale were high.

3. The United States was respected and admired by most nations and peoples of the world.

4. The dollar was a solid currency.

5. Gasoline cost less than a dollar a gallon.

You will probably expect me to argue that Bill Clinton, who had been president for the previous eight years, deserves credit for at least some of this. Actually, I think that the first George Bush deserves much credit, and I think he deserved another four years in office.

I, on the other hand, expect you to say that everything that has gone wrong and will continue to go much worse wrong is really the fault of Bill Clinton and that George Bush II is just struggling with Clinton's legacy. If that is true, George Bush II is an extraordinarily weak, incompetent, and stupid president. I would have to disagree with at least some of that assessment.

I do think that George Bush II is much better at causing problems than he is at recognizing them and solving them.
