exel intent is different. alza/elan wanted to keep the eps high and the r&d cost off their financial statements.

Alza vehicles were good to me. I did a few of them, at guaranteed 20% compounded returns. You knew they were going to be bought back at prespecified prices and time frames, so it was close to risk free. I wish they were still allowed. People didn't understand what a great deal they were.
