btw, sounds like you experienced some great skiing in Utah -- it's one of my favorite places (haven't been back for 2 years).

I had a bad skiing accident at Vail more than a decade ago and I blew out my right shoulder (a hill sack fracture and total dislocation)...After seeing many Orthopoedic surgeons and going through too much physical therapy I finally took action several years ago and had surgery...It was time to do it since my shoulder was unstable and would pop out when I was playing tennis or lifting things...The operation should be done by "a real expert" who is very focussed on the area you want repaired...Yet, you are right that you never get back to 100%...I have a right shoulder that has pins and has been wired back together -- it is a great improvement BUT my range of motion is never going to be what it used to be.
