US firms to hire at solid pace - WSJ

According to the WSJ, US co's intentions for hiring in the 3Q look to continue a healthy but stable pattern that started at the beginning of the year, according to the quarterly survey that staffing giant Manpower plans to release today. The survey of 16K US employers found that 57% see no change in work-force levels in the 3Q compared with the current qrtr, while 31% expect to increase their hiring. Only 6% of surveyed co's said they expect to cut their work forces, and another 6% were unsure about staffing plans. Hiring expectations have been relatively strong for 6 consecutive qrtrs. The latest expectation of increased hiring "indicates that employers are hiring on an as-needed basis, but are still not ready to staff up until demand for their business truly requires it," said Jeffrey A. Joerres , Chmn and CEO of Manpower. The outlook "is good, but there's no acceleration," Mr. Joerres said. "There's hiring, but it's very cautious. Co's are not doing anything that's not absolutely necessary." Moreover, he said, some co's are indicating they are having problems finding employees.
