What flag burners fail to realize when they perform their act of defiance, is it draws out the nationalism in all <strike>freedom loving</strike> flag waving Americans, and brings us closer together, not further apart.
I think it's a serious error to focus on what makes you different from other people, instead of what makes you alike. More likely than not, the people who burn flags love freedom as much as you do, maybe they just don't think the American flag happens to symbolize freedom, or maybe they think the country is going in the wrong direction and they want to get things back on track.
"My country, right or wrong, she can do no wrong" is not an American sentiment. "My country, may she always be right, but right or wrong, my country," is an American sentiment, as is "My country, right or wrong, if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right." |
