Interesting you mention the NX bit, which gives advanced virus protection. Because it appears that INTEL has DROPPED support for its "execute disable" feature on all 64-bit CPUs. Sound phoney? Go to intel.com which is a table of processor features. The ONLY processors with the special asterisk indicating XD support are the 5xxJ series and some Celeron D series, NONE of which support 64-bit. In particular, none of Intel's 600 or 800 series support XD, and no notebook chips at all. I thought this was unbelievable, especially for the 64-bit enabled chips, so I looked at the 64-bit Extension Technology Software Developer's Guide, Vol 1. The PAE address translation tables are diagrammed and described beginning at PDF page 33. They should show the NX bit as bit 63 of all of the paging table entries. But no, bit 63 is "reserved" -- no XD bit functionality -- in all 7 formats shown. So it's a mystery to me how Intel supports XD in the CPUs for which it claims support, but there aren't many of them anyway. Petz
