The rejection of ideology part is because many things are done strictly on an ideological basis without regard to the long term or even short term effects. Labels are thrown around and attached to everything and then their worth is weighed based on what the label says. For example, a proposal, regardless of its merits, that gets labeled "socialist" it dead from that point forward. If something gets labeled "anti-union" there is going to be a hardcore that goes after it. And so on. This labeling and pigeon-holing gets in the way of getting things done.

Good point, but I think its more about pigeon-holing and labeling then it is ideology.

There is no reason why conservatives, liberals, independents, etc. can't work together

Agreed. They may not be able to work together in certain areas. Many of their goals are different, but where they can find agreement they shouldn't let there other differences keep them from working together.
