Its possible that the people in the middle are a majority. Certanly if you define the middle in a wide enough way they are. But even if you could get a well funded and organized 3rd party with some good candidates up and running, you wouldn't gain these voters by default. You would have to battle for each of them.

The Republicans and the Democrats can battle for them and they have a base. Its hard for any party to win without having some base they can count on. And of course its even harder for a less established party. Sometimes all of the established parties start to look so bad that a "none of the above" party can come in and actually win, but it doesn't happen that often, and when it does the new party has to form a base or it will probably be on its way out in an election or two.
