Giving them a check from the government insures that they are a burden on society. Yes they did pay in but they are getting more back, and they aren't getting back money that was a real return on an investment that was made with the revenue they put in to the system years ago, but rather they are getting back currently taxed money.

There are some reasons to defend the current systems, but "to keep the elderly from becoming a burden on society" isn't one of them.
