I have very mixed opinions about dead bodies. I certainly understand the honor and bravery involved in the military code of not leaving the bodies of our armed forces behind. I think if a relative were killed fighting a war, it would be horrible to imagine that enemy soldiers defaced it somehow.

I really liked it that my grandmother was entombed in a mausoleum, but only because there was a specific place I could go and sit quietly and imagine that I felt her presence amid all the stained glass and pretty music. I have no religious beliefs, so I don't believe people go to heaven, nor do I believe that anything remains of the dead person's spirit where their body is. But I found the whole thing comforting. I think it really helped me mourn her better.

Scattering ashes is fine with me; so is keeping a pretty urn full of them on the mantel or wherever. I suppose I would like to be buried just wrapped in a shroud so my body would dissolve and go back to the earth, and there are some places you can do that now, but I don't have really strong feelings. I think it is up to my daughter--what would comfort her the most. She has no religious beliefs either, so I think it is just a matter of being in close proximity to what is left of me that would comfort her. Of course, she will have my extensive collection of jewelry to wear every day, if she wants to feel close to me. She is already doing that, though.
